Frequently asked questions.
How long is a typical ocean safari?
Our ocean safaris typically run for an average of 6 to 7 hours. Depending on animal activity, we may stay out a little longer (or shorter) depending on what we see. Also, keep in mind that weather can play a factor on how long or short we are out at sea.
This is a snorkel safari, so please be realistic in your swimming ability in the open ocean. I want everyone to have the opportunity to experience the beauty of the underwater world and will do my absolute best to make sure you are comfortable and confident in the water. Mask, snorkel and fins are a must while you are in the water (life vests are available and can be worn if you’re not a strong swimmer). If you prefer to stay dry, there is absolutely no pressure to jump in. Sometimes the view topside is just as good (if not better) as being in the water!
What to bring on the boat?
Snorkel, mask and fins (we recommend you bring your own, please let us know if you do not have any of these items prior to a trip, we occasionally have a spare to loan). We discourage people from using the “full face” snorkel/mask combo for safety reasons.
Mask defogger, blister stickers or tape for feet, Booties or socks to wear with swim fins
Wetsuit (Optional) full, shorty or spring suit. Usually a 2-4mm should suffice if you are one who gets chilly. Water temps can range from low 70s and up depending on the season.
Rashguard (recommended)-perfect for sun protection as well as wearing in the water as layer of protection (sometimes there can be little stinging jellies in the water).
Sun protection-Reef safe sunscreen, SPF lip balm, hat, sunglasses (polarized are best), buff/neck gaiter.
Water proof bag, refillable water bottle, light windbreaker (if you get cold easily), towel.
Camera/Gopro/action camera (I will also be taking photos and videos which I will share).
Seasickness Tablets-If you are prone to seasickness, please take medication at least an hour prior to getting on the boat. (were sorry, but we will not end a trip early if you get seasick.)
We have water and some light snacks on board. Please feel free to bring drinks or food of your choice for the day if you wish (we will have an ice chest onboard).
What should we expect to see?
Given that this is the ocean and the animals are wild, there is absolutely no guarantee to see any particular species on any given day or season.
With that being said we have a very good chance at seeing and snorkeling with hundreds to thousands of Mobula rays during their migration April-July.
Other animals that may possibly be spotted on our excursions include:
-Whales: Blue, Fin, Humpback, Brydes, Beaked and Sperm Whales.
-Dolphins: Bottlenose, Common, Spinner, Pantropical spotted, Rough tooth, Rissos, False killer whales, Pilot whales and if we’re super lucky, Orcas!
-Sea lions, Sea turtles, Sharks/whale sharks, Manta rays, Marlins/Sailfish/Fish, various Sea bird species and more!
Please note-As a conscientious ecotour operation, wildlife and safety is our top priority! If the wildlife is intentionally avoiding us, we will leave them alone and look for something else. Also, there sometimes may be particular aquatic species of interest that every boat on the water that day wants to see. If we feel that the animals are being harassed or too many boats are in that area, we will leave and look elsewhere for wildlife.
How many guests to operate a trip?
In general, the maximum amount of guests I prefer to have on the boat is 6.
For day trips we need a minimum of 3 people (or the cost of 3 people) to operate.
For multiday trips, we will need at least 2 guests to operate (with a max of 6 guests). If there are less than 5 guests on a multi-day trip, there is a possibility on any of the given days that a day trip guest (or 2) may join us.
Can we book a private trip?
Absolutely! We can provide a day or multiday trip, send a message for your special request.
Do you have age restrictions?
We love kids and want them to experience all things ocean, however we prefer that they should be of an age to be able to withstand being on a boat for 6+ hours (sorry, but we will not end a trip early because a child or adult gets restless or bored unless you’re a private trip). So with that being said, kiddos in the teens are ok. Please keep in mind that there needs to be a parent or adult legal guardian with anyone under 18.
What about Weather? Refunds?
We will do our absolute best to monitor the wind and weather reports. For safety and comfort reasons, we will not go out if weather or wind is extreme. If you signed up for a day trip and we are unable to go out that day, we will issue you a refund or can put you on a trip for another day. If we are already out, and the weather unexpectedly changes and our day is cut short, we will not be able to prorate your trip. If we have a “weather” day on a multiday trip and are not able to go out, we will do our best to extend the time on the water for our remaining boat days. Nature is unpredictable; although we will do our best to find wildlife, there are somedays that no matter how hard we try, we do not find anything. (I always recommend doing several trips as no two days are alike). So please be realistic with your expectations. We do not offer refunds if we do not see any animals (which is quite rare).
